Italy ➜ Umbria
Umbria, the land of St Francis of Assisi, is rich in history and spirituality, famous for its medieval hill towns, dense forests and local cuisine, especially wine and truffles. The hill town of Perugia, which is also the capital of the region, is the first stop on the calendar of those who decide to spend a holiday here. With a population of around 850,000, it boasts an extraordinary historical and artistic heritage. The centre of the city is Piazza IV Novembre, a beautiful medieval square surrounded by the magnificent Palazzo dei Priori and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. The Fontana Maggiore, the city's landmark, is a true Gothic masterpiece and one of the city's main attractions.
For golf, you can choose the historic (it dates back to 1959) Perugia Golf Club, located just 6 km from the city centre. It is a gently undulating par 72 course whose clubhouse was converted from an old lime kiln dating back to 1921 and whose imposing towers are still intact. Or Antognolla Golf, one of the most spectacular 18-hole courses in Italy, designed by Robert Trent Jones II and already recognised as "Italy's best golf course" by the World Golf Awards.
